Foods to Eat With Braces

Braces

In order to align or straighten your teeth or to address another dental issue like a gap, underbite, or overbite, a dentist or orthodontist may advise braces. Braces may significantly enhance your teeth, but it may take a few days or weeks for your mouth to become used to the added pressure. During the first few days, you can also experience some discomfort or irritability around your teeth and gums.

The toughest adjustment, according to those who have worn braces, may be giving up some of your favorite foods. While wearing braces, several foods should be avoided since they might harm the braces by becoming trapped in them.

When you initially receive braces, what can you eat?

While getting braces doesn’t hurt, the days after your appointment your mouth could feel sensitive. As a result, consuming meals with a harder texture may hurt. Your orthodontist will probably advise you to limit your diet to soft foods for the first few days since you’ll also need to learn a new way to chew.

It is natural for you to experience some discomfort during this time, thus the following meals are suggested during the first week after getting braces:

  • Purees
  • Soups
  • Yogurts
  • Ripe fruits or compotes
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Steamed fish

These foods will assist you in maintaining a healthy diet without putting too much strain on your teeth. The greatest method to ensure reduced pain and discomfort while wearing braces is to consume soft meals during the whole course of therapy.

Foods to stay away from after getting braces

You should be aware of the foods you can eat and the foods you should stay away from after having braces. You can consume a variety of foods while wearing braces. Some “safe” meals, however, may not be the best choice right away after having braces since they might irritate your mouth and increase sensitivity and pressure. The foods to avoid are:

Hard foods

Any hard food, like hard crusty bread, popcorn, or ice cubes, comes first. Directly biting into a sandwich puts pressure on the braces, which may hurt and make you uncomfortable. You also run the danger of your braces coming off.

Whole, unprocessed fruits and veggies

If you intend to bite straight into certain fruits and vegetables, including apples, raw carrots, or corn on the cob, you’ll need to exercise caution. Consuming pre-cut portions or cooked veggies is best.

Sticky foods

While wearing braces, your biggest enemies will be sweets, candies, and gum. They will be challenging to remove since they will adhere to the whole surface of the braces and if not removed it can result in the formation of cavities.

Chocolate

Yes, you may eat chocolate while wearing braces, but be careful not to bite down too hard to prevent extra strain on the braces. Remember to consume chocolate in moderation.

Hard and fibrous fish and meat

They will be challenging to chew and more challenging to clean. Fibrous foods often become caught between teeth and are more challenging to take out while wearing braces.

Popcorn

Eating popcorn while wearing braces may be problematic since the popcorn hulls can get caught there, and sweet popcorn can provide its own issues due to its high sugar content.
